Kevin. New England. Some of my interests include sci-fi, sci-non-fi, music theory, humor, and Alaska (grew up there). My age makes me more or less a grandparent on tumblr, but I'm not really that old. Not yet, at least. But probably older than you. Just saying.

I started this blog with the intention of creating and capturing cool stuff I find. A scrapbook, if you will.

When I find good internets, I will make them happen here. Check back often for more internets.

I put internets I like here

Soyuz Rocket Launch - the moment of ignition, as-seen from their target, the Space Station.

That’s one of the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

To the child in this picture (and any other children who have this bedspread and pillow case):
I hate you.
I hate you so much.
I hate that you have this and that I, at your age, did not.
I hate that your generation can reasonably expect to participate in the resumption of manned space travel while mine will have to be satisfied with the vicarious experiences afforded by robotic probes and telescopic imagery.
I hate you.
So much.
Sincerely,
An eternally-frustrated would-be Astronaut

Audio post with 2 notes - Played 19 times

Ten years ago on this date, the crew of the space shuttle Columbia lost their lives when the shuttle broke up during atmospheric reentry.  I wrote this piece, “16 Minutes from Home,” in the days that followed as a tribute to their sacrifice.

On today’s date in 1967, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee lost their lives in a fire during a training exercise onboard Apollo-Saturn 204, later known as Apollo 1.

Video with 4 notes

Some really stunning near-HD, video stabilized footage from Apollo 16’s Lunar Rover being driven around by (I assume) John Young.

Makes me think of this song.

How NASA might build its very first warp drive →

I’ve accepted that I will never get to travel through space like I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid, but, damnit, it would be so fucking awesome to see the first real steps towards that dream happen in my lifetime.  Let’s get crackin’, science.

Today’s political post

This is so awesome.

get owned shitnerd

Not to mention a lot of jobs are involved in a project like that so it’s not like people are being kept from work because of this, and who knows how many jobs may be created in the future because of things learned from stuff like this, and so forth.
In short: “James” and the pic creator there are dumbasses.

Let’s see:
Giving numbers without checking those numbers? Check.
Not looking at the bigger picture of just how many jobs the production and launch of Curiosity provided, from gathering the resources to building the components to assembly to actual launch? Check.
Not looking at the WAY bigger picture of how better rovers on Mars could help us find things, like previously undiscovered resources (scarce on Earth) or even land (growing scarcer every day on Earth) that we could maybe one day colonise? Check.
Passive-aggressive asshattery? Check.
TRIFECTA, PEOPLE.
*sigh* Some people have no damn vision.

Also, things like Microwaves and cell phones all have their start in the space program.

Hey Jens…

As a graduate of the US Space Academy (legit, no joke) I applaud any and all efforts to properly contextualize NASA’s finances within the Federal budget.  When I was a cadet, the metaphor was “If the Federal budget was a football field, NASA’s budget would take up a one yard square.”

NASA just landed a rover on Mars, this is the very first picture.  This JUST happened minutes ago.

I am literally speechless with awe

While it is a fantastic image, this is not from Curiosity.  This was taken by the rover Spirit in 2005.  Curiosity’s main cameras won’t be up til the end of the week.  Source
