Kevin. New England. Some of my interests include sci-fi, sci-non-fi, music theory, humor, and Alaska (grew up there). My age makes me more or less a grandparent on tumblr, but I'm not really that old. Not yet, at least. But probably older than you. Just saying.

I started this blog with the intention of creating and capturing cool stuff I find. A scrapbook, if you will.

When I find good internets, I will make them happen here. Check back often for more internets.

Just watched a 2 hour “making of” special on the film this past weekend.  Come, take of my knowledge!

  • Ferris was originally a darker, more nihilistic character.  He drank, he smoke, he talked to Cameron about how he was going to manipulate his dad into giving him money.  During editing, they realized this made Ferris pretty unlikable, so they cut most of it and turned him into the playfully mischievous teen icon/idol he is known as today.
  • Did you know there were two more Bueller kids (girl, age 12, and boy, age 6) completely cut from the film?  In scenes in the family’s kitchen, you can still see the kids’ drawings on the fridge.
  • Matthew Broderick and Alan Ruck were already good friends having appeared in the original Broadway run of Biloxi Blues (Broderick also starred in the film adaptation).  Their chemistry together came very naturally because of this.  Mia Sara (“Sloane”) had appeared in only one film prior to this one, Legend.
  • The production team had no idea if they would be able to secure the rights to use the Beatles’ “Twist and Shout” during filming.  If Capitol Records said no, they had no fall back position.  Also, they essentially crashed an actual parade (The Von Steuben Day Parade, a German heritage parade) with their own float, secretly inserting it into the parade line.  Later, they needed to film additional shots and restaged the parade with just three floats circling a block.  They put out a notice to newspapers and radio stations that they needed people to show up to be the crowd, not knowing if anyone would show up.  Around 10,000 people came from all over the area to participate.  Pretty much all of the crowd members you see dancing are not actors, just folks enjoying the music.
  • The actors who played Ferris’ parents got together during filming and eventually got married.
  • One scene that was filmed and cut from the film that made it into one of the trailers featured Ferris going to a radio station and doing an interview about how he had been chosen to go up on the Space Shuttle.  The day before the preview was scheduled to be released, the Challenger disaster happened.  They had to immediately pull the trailer and re-edit it.
  • Perhaps the best known line from the film (“Life moves pretty fast; if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”) was improvised by Broderick, based on the original line written by John Hughes.  Hughes actively encouraged the actors to do multiple takes and change things as they saw fit.  This thrilled some actors (Edie McClurg, “Grace”) and terrified others (Jeffrey Jones, “Principal Rooney”).
